Individual State's Surveys

Many states in the Central Flyway conduct their own surveys to assist in management decisions. Examples as of 2002 include:

  • Kansas conducts a ground survey of breeding Canada geese and waterfowl are counted essentially statewide (on public lands) twice monthly from September through March. Kansas has been conducting this latter survey for over 30 years.
  • Nebraska conducts their own Hunter Success Survey.
  • New Mexico has conducted annual aerial waterfowl and crane surveys during the months of Oct, Nov, Dec since the 1950s. Additional weekly ground counts in the middle Rio Grande Valley are conducted in cooperation with Bosque del Apache NWR for light geese and cranes from November through the end of January. The state also conducts its own waterfowl and small game surveys to estimate harvest and hunter success.
  • North Dakota conducts a survey of breeding waterfowl across the state, a task it has completed annually since 1948. They also conduct a weekly spring waterfowl migration and breeding chronology survey which has been done since 1953 and a duck production survey since 1955. The state conducts its own Hunter Success Survey which it has done since 1953.
  • South Dakota conducts weekly aerial surveys from early November to mid-December on portions of the Missouri River to count waterfowl. It also conducts state harvest surveys for its September Canada goose season and the regular season for doves, ducks and geese.
  • Texas conducts periodic, aerial surveys of geese during the fall migration and its own Hunter Success Survey for migratory birds.
  • Wyoming conducts an aerial survey of breeding Canada geese and their own Hunter Success Survey.
